Map of the Month - October
GfK Purchasing Power for coffee and tea in Germany, 2011
This month's map from GfK GeoMarketing shows the distribution of buying potential for coffee and tea in 2011 (data source: GfK Purchasing Power for Retail Product Lines, Germany 2011).

Tea or coffee?
The study bears out the common view that Germans prefer coffee to tea: Germans have an average of €60 per person at their disposal for coffee - almost six times as much as that available for tea. The most avid coffee drinkers live in the eastern federal states, almost all of which have an above-average amount (per capita) available for coffee. Top of the list is the federal state of Brandenburg, where the purchasing power for coffee exceeds the national average by eleven percent.
Berlin is a special case: While the potential for coffee in this federal state matches the national average, Berliners spend five percent more than the national average on tea. The other city states also exhibit some special characteristics: Inhabitants of Bremen have the least amount of purchasing power for coffee of any federal state, while inhabitants of Hamburg spend more on tea than residents of any other federal state: The per capita purchasing power for tea in Hamburg is 14% above the national average.
