Map of the Month - September
World postcode systems
This month's map from GfK GeoMarketing features the world's postcode systems.

Almost every country uses them, but they never look the same. Without them, mail employees would despair. Only a few countries such as Ireland operate (almost) without them. Postcodes may seem unimpressive, but they are essential for ensuring that mailed items and many other things
- even people - reach their intended destinations.
Postcodes are also the primary basis for geographic analyses. Using postcodes, almost all place-based forms of information can be imported and visualized on digital maps. Eighty percent of all company data has a geographic component. For example, every address contains a postcode. Geomarketing involves using this geographic element to analyze and visualize data.
Companies use specialized digital postcode maps to import and visualize data on customers, branch locations and warehouses. Geographic analyses also play a key role in scientific undertakings and insurance companies. Postcodes are almost always the means by which data is geocoded.
GfK GeoMarketing's worldwide coverage of postcode boundaries is a distinguishing feature of its maps - the company's own cartographic division produces worldwide digital postcode maps. These maps are regularly updated, which is essential, because postcode boundaries are constantly changing: Postal organizations often add or merge postcodes, and sometimes they reform the entire postal system. There are thousands of postcode changes every year in Europe alone. Up-to-date maps are indispensible for ensuring that geographic analyses are accurate and error-free.
All postcode, administrative and topographic maps provided by GfK GeoMarketing are available in all standard digital map formats, including *.shp (ESRI), *.mid/*.mif (MapInfo), *.gdb (Geodatabase) and Oracle. GfK GeoMarketing's maps include comprehensive coverage, seamlessly fitting and overlap-free boundaries and map levels, national and local place-name attributions and infinite zoom capability.
Detailed free samples can be downloaded in all standard digital map formats at
