Retail spending as a share of total private spending
GfK GeoMarketing has created an overview map that illustrates the anticipated retail growth rates in Europe between 2009 and 2010 (source: GfK GeoMarketing – map created with RegioGraph).

In a study commissioned by the European Shopping Centre Trust (ESCT), GfK GeoMarketing examined the conditions of the retail branch in Europe. Despite the equalizing tendencies
apparent in recent years, expenditure
patterns among private households in
Europe continue to vary significantly.
Particularly striking in this regard is
the example of France and Germany:
With its around 60 million inhabitants,
France‘s consumers spend around the
same amount as neighboring Germany‘s
over 80 million consumers.
The determining factors for the noticeable
variations in consumption behavior
in Europe are primarily the differing levels
of economic development and wealth as
well as pronounced differences in shopping
cultures and lifestyles. Amidst these conditions, retail spending
comprises a small share of total private
spending, with values below 30% in Italy,
Germany and Greece. Austria, Switzerland
and Slovakia lie just above this
mark at 31%. At the other end of the
spectrum is Russia, which has the highest
relative retail spending at 61%. In the
middle are Bulgaria, Estonia, Hungary,
Croatia and Slovenia at 45%.
About the study
The turnover and purchasing power calculations were carried out in euros based on the average 2009 exchange rate for the related currency (as reported by the ECB). Information and data status correspond to March 2010. The study is available upon request from GfK GeoMarketing.
