German consumers will have an average of 700 euros more to spend in 2008 than in the current year. With this growth of approximately 3.8%, purchasing power is growing faster than inflation. South Germany, in particular, and the areas around major towns and cities are the most affluent, with the new federal states also continuing to catch up. These are the findings published by GfK GeoMarketing in their current survey of purchasing power in Germany.

In several regions of Central and Eastern Europe, people are wealthier than their western European neighbors. For instance, Budapest’s inhabitants have more money than those of Freienbessingen in the German federal state of Thuringia. In the Baltic capital cities, the residents also have more disposable income than those of Italy’s weakest community. However, in a country comparison, the new EU member states are still lagging behind. These are some of the findings of the "GfK Purchasing Power Europe 2007/2008" study.
